Antioch Illinois Real Estate

Located nearly halfway between Chicago and Milwaukee, the Antioch Township in northern Illinois is one of the smallest villages in Lake County.  Originally home to Native Americans until the 1830’s, the 7.38 square mile plot of land is now home to over 13,000 residents and growing rapidly as more houses and townhomes are constructed.  Resting at 770 ft above sea level and west of Interstate 94 on Rt. 83, the predominantly Caucasian township still remains a low key haven that boasts a high quality of life.

Residential expansion in the village of Antioch was a steady process from the 1950 through to 1998 when a surge of new building permits caused the estimates of the 2005 population to reach new heights.  Of the 3,398 homes built by 2000, 3,293 of them had residents and 2,216 were owner occupied. Though the homes do vary in size and architectural style, typical owner occupied homes have three bedrooms whereas rented homes generally only have two.  Finally, the median house sales price from the beginning of 12/07 to the end of 2/08 was $220,000.

Antioch is certainly no bustling metropolis and the majority of adults commute to work outside the city limits.  Nevertheless, the village and surrounding areas do have some commercial development as well as several convenient local amenities such as the picturesque views of the Hiram Buttrick Sawmill.  Mayor Dorothy Larson describes the city as having a “hometown atmosphere” and the downtown shopping area as “beautiful and quaint.” Residents of Antioch are also treated to concerts and special events sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and other citywide organizations.  Many of these proceedings are hosted in the public recreation areas such as the William E. Brook Wetland Sanctuary and Entertainment Center, Antioch’s newest park.  Also, visitors and residents eager to brush up on the city’s proud history are encouraged to visit either of the two local museums including the Lakes Region Historical Society.  Finally, the township is also home to the Antioch Fine Arts Foundation, a non-profit organization founded in 2001 with the purpose of promoting local art programs.

Children attend elementary schools and junior high schools that are member of the Antioch School District #34 before they eventually head to Antioch Community High School for grades nine through twelve.
