Elgin Illinois Real Estate

            Originally inhabited by Native Americans until the Black Hawk Indian War of 1832 drove them out, the northern Chicago suburb of Elgin in Kane County, Illinois is now home to over 100,000 residents.  Widely regarded as one of the fastest growing cities in the state, this large, 25.0 square mile plot of land houses a diverse population in a quickly developing center for commerce.

            Developers have been constructing houses in Elgin at a steady rate since the beginning of the 20th century and a little before it as well.  As of the year 2000 there were 13,457 homes within city limits. 13,226 of those were inhabited and a total of 10,136 homes were owner occupied.  Though the homes do vary in size, they are known for their beautiful architecture such as Victorian homes in the Queen Anne’s style built between 1908 and 1940.  From before this era, you will also find home is Elgin made of cobblestones a very popular style in its time. 

            Nevertheless, typical owner occupied homes have about three to four bedrooms versus rental homes which generally only have one or two.  Finally, the median house sales price from the beginning of 12/07 to the end of 2/08 was $229,500 with and average cost per square foot of $163.

            Elgin is not only fledgling center of commerce with redevelopments already underway, but it is also known for its recreational activities, its focus on the arts, and conservation of its natural resources.  Local hotspots include the 112 acre Lords Park which encompasses the Elgin Public Museum and a herd of American bison.  Other residents prefer to see the Elgin Symphony Orchestra or the Elgin Choral Union.  Finally, the city is also the home of the Janus and Elgin Theatre Companies.

            The Community Unit School Districts 300, 301, and 303 as well as the Elgin Area School District U46 all serve this rapidly growing municipality.
